My Stroll to the Gym

I walk to the gym during rain or shine, minus rain. Truth be told, I usually walk when it’s not raining and above 45*F. This is still better than most (and certainly better than the handful of people I see daily taking the elevator once they’ve arrived).

The photos below are arranged in a manner of 1) leaving my driveway to 19) arriving at the gym.

It’s about 3/4 of a mile to the Highland Park Lifetime Fitness. It’s a decent walk, fit for commentary – and I’m going to add commentary on each image later (for example: more sidewalks, less roads, better urban design, etc.).

Great idea! I’ve been thinking about doing a simlar post on my daughters walk to school next year.

Think those first couple roads (Davern and Ford Pkwy?) need sidewalks? My rule of thumb is that if the road deserves stripes, it deserves sidewalks (this doesn’t intentionally exclude certain roads without striping that also deserve sidewalks).

    • Davern absolutely needs sidewalks (I’ll write more on this later). There are lots of kids who live below the hill who have to walk up and down it for school (HPHS). Cars travel fast on the hill and there’s no sidewalk – it’s actually pretty dangerous. The Davern stripe would work as a bike lane if it was out from W.7th up to (at least) Ford Pkwy. I’d agree with your policy that “My rule of thumb is that if the road deserves stripes, it deserves sidewalks” – Nate
